LASIK is a surgical procedure performed to correct refractive errors, reducing dependency on corrective lenses. This surgery permanently changes the shape of the cornea by using a laser. If you are using lenses to compensate for nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism, LASIK may be a viable option.
If you have had a change in your lens prescriptions in the past year, if you actively participate in contact sports or if you are under 18, you are not a good candidate for LASIK. Other factors such as cost, pre-existing conditions and lifestyle routines may affect your ability to have LASIK.
Risks are involved with LASIK, just like any other medical procedure. Most patients are very pleased with the results, but you need to be aware of the risks and prepared to cope with complications if they arise. Under- or over-treatment, and severe dry eye syndrome are some of the associated risks. This list is not exhaustive, there are additional risks to weigh when comparing to the benefits of this surgery. Make sure you take time to consider risks and benefits before committing to surgery.
If you decide to have LASIK, prepare for the surgical procedure itself to last about 30 minutes. From your first pre-operative visit through your last post-operative evaluation, the timeframe is about a year. Most surgeons request comprehensive eye exams annually after LASIK. Prior to the surgery you will need to stop wearing contact lenses. You also are to discontinue using topical ingredients in and around your eyes. After surgery, you will need to wait a few days before engaging in excessive activity and a you will need to wait a few weeks before applying creams, lotions, makeup and perfumes. It can take anywhere from 3 to 6 months for your vision to stabilize. You will need to see your doctor multiple times within this period to monitor your post-operative course.
