Prevent AMD
What can I do to prevent AMD?
AMD, 'Age-Related Macular Degeneration', is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss among elderly people. It slowly robs people of their central vision. Recommendations to help prevent AMD:
Don't smoke. Smoking is a HUGE risk factor for AMD.
Keep yourself healthy. A diet high in green, leafy vegetables, anti-oxidants can be beneficial.
Vitamin supplements, especially lutein, can be beneficial if essential nutrients aren't being consumed with a healthy diet.
Eat oily fish such as tuna or salmon. This provides you with Omega-3 fatty acids which are anti-inflammatory and have been shown to help protect the macula. If eating fish is not possible, a fish oil supplement is recommended.
Exercise.
Eat daily fruits and nuts.
Protection from ultraviolet light; wear a hat and sunglasses.
